1,145 m² building in Colonia del Sacramento's historic district

Intervention:

The project creates a public internal passage that crosses and connects an old warehouse with a series of residential cells or boxes, directly linked to the street as an extension or passageway of the city. Archaeological finds are interspersed along the passage and displayed as in an open-air museum.

Architectural features:

The large warehouse space is enhanced by highlighting its significant elements: tall walls with exposed brick buttresses and pinotea wood trusses supporting the roof. New glazed mezzanine boxes are inserted between them; their movement and contemporary design enrich and give scale to the pedestrian passage.

• Construction materials: common bricks, exposed concrete, wood and stone.
• The residences have simple volumes, with exposed concrete boxes formed with rough boards, juxtaposed and gradually stepped to follow the different levels of the plot's topography.
• The overlapping boxes create solid and open spaces along the pedestrian passage, with contrasts of light and shadow and a variety of spatial experiences.
• The stepped design creates viewing terraces in a setting close to the river and the heritage buildings that define the urban scale of the historic district.
